Access to Justice – Improving Justice for Disabled People Conference 16/11/09 in Edinburgh
The first of its kind anywhere in the UK, this event will see disabled people unite with professionals and practitioners from the justice sector to improve disabled people’s access to justice in Scotland.
Opened by Cabinet Secretary for Justice and Communities, Kenny McAskill, the conference will see the culmination of six months of involvement and consultation events co-ordinated by Capability Scotland in partnership with representatives of the Scottish Justice Sector and Scottish Disability organisations. Launched in August, this unique partnership saw public bodies come together for the first time to meet their duty to involve disabled people in policy making.
Representatives of the Scottish Government, the Law Society of Scotland, the Scottish Legal Aid Board, Scottish Court Service, Crown Office & Procurator Fiscal Service and the Scottish Prison Service will be in attendance, along with disabled people travelling from across Scotland who have direct experience and knowledge of justice issues.
Paid-for places are available to organisations with an interest in justice at £79+VAT. If you are a disabled person with an interest in, and experience of, access to justice, you may be entitled to a free place. To book your place at the conference or for anymore information please pone Michaela Crosthwaite on 0131 347 1055 or email michaela.crosthwaite@capability-scotland.org.uk.
Directing Your Own Support: Self Directed Support Event
9.30 am to 3.45 pm (approx) on Tuesday 29th September 2009 at Airth Castle near Stirling
The Scottish Government is dedicated to increasing the use of direct payments in Scotland. Research evidence shows that many people who purchase their own support through direct payments enjoy a better quality of life. The Scottish Government is firmly committed to involving people who use services and family carers, through developing its strategy for self-directed support.
This event will provide up to date information on recent self-directed support developments in Scotland and delegates will hear directly from direct payment recipients. Service users and professionals will have the opportunity to share their views on the next steps to making self directed support a reality. To register your interest in this event, please contact Helen Sprakes on 0131 275 7751 or e-mail helen.sprakes@nhs.net Venue information can be found here.
