LCiL resource pack
Training Resource Packs - Independent Living
This project was funded by the Scottish Government, formerly the Scottish Executive, from 2006 - 2009.
The pack is intended to give Direct Payment Support Organisations the resources to plan and deliver training courses, which will enable disabled people to make informed choices about Independent Living options, using Direct Payments as a tool to manage their own support.
The aims of the project were:
• To develop and package Lothian Centre for Inclusive Living's (LCiL) training materials relating to Independent Living issues & Direct Payments for disabled people into a comprehensive Training Resource Pack.
• To ensure that any Direct Payments Support Organisation in Scotland, regardless of the size of the organisation, has access to the LCiL Training Resource Pack.
• To ensure that the Resource Pack itself is easy to use, with relevant information and course material.
• To work in partnership with specific isations to ensure that an agreed standard of information and material is provided.
To obtain a free set please contact Maggie here.
This superb resource is also available to Self Directed Support Organisations out-with Scotland for a very reasonable price. Contact Maggie, as above, for more info.
The design of the pack is intended to reflect a ‘model of good practice’ and as such be accessible to a greater number of people.
To achieve this we have used:
► Font Size & Type. LCiL use Arial font, size 14, as a general rule for all informational purposes. This resource pack uses Arial 14 for the main text, size 18 for sub headings and size 20 for the headers. Text using Arial font is easier to read than many others such as Times New Roman, size 12, for example.
► Plain English. By using plain English and avoiding the use of complex sentences, the content will be more accessible to the reader
► Picture Supported Handouts. The handouts which support each course are picture supported, where appropriate, to promote equality of access.
► Colour Coding. As this is a working resource guide, with sections intended to be photocopied, the handout sections have not all been colour coded. However LCiL usually colour code information booklets and other literature where appropriate for ease of use. Suggestions for the use of colour coded handouts are given in ‘About the Resource Pack’ section.
► Other Formats. Copies of the pack will be available, upon request, in Braille, Audio DVD and CD formats.
► Size & weight of resource guide. LCiL have produced 3 folders to ensure that no pack is too heavy. However, when used as a working resource, we recommend that trainers remove the relevant section.
Please note that we are aware that there are many barriers that prevent the implementation of all Good Practice suggestions, particularly with regards to budget restraints. However, we feel it is important to be aware of the guidelines and to realise that even small changes can make a difference.
