Scottish Government pledge to deliver National Care Service
It is promising to see the Scottish Government commit to creating a National Care Service as recommended in the Feeley review (Independent Review of Adult Social Care in Scotland).
The National Care Service is set to oversee the delivery of care, improve standards, ensure enhanced pay and conditions for workers and provide better support for unpaid carers.
Speaking during the Health Recovery Debate on Tuesday 1 June 2021, Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care, Humza Yousef, stated that the National Care Service is “the most significant public sector reform” since the NHS was established.
Mr Yousef said: “Our commitment to create a National Care Service will deliver services founded on fairness, equality and human rights and will be placed on the same level of esteem as our National Health Service.
“In our first 100 days we will begin a consultation on the necessary legislation with a view to introducing it in the first year of this parliament and we will also establish a social covenant steering group including those with lived experience who use our care services to make sure that they are part of the co-design process.”
