Participation Requests and SDS
The Community Empowerment Act provides an opportunity for community groups, organisations and ‘communities of interest’ to request the start of a formal process to look at a local issue of concern. This could relate to any aspect of the implementation of Self Directed Support in your area. This event will enable you to understand:
- What a Participation Request is
- Who is eligible to make such a Request
- How to make such a Request
- How to identify Outcomes that you would like to achieve
- What timescales are involved in the process
- How to maximise the potential that a Participation request can offer
- What other resources and support is available to you

Children, Young People, GIRFEC and Self Directed Support
Learn about Self Directed Support and when this becomes relevant for a child or young person with additional support for learning needs. We will explore key areas such as:
- Eligibility and access to SDS
- How SDS relates to GIRFEC
- A Child’s Plan and SDS
- How choice, control and flexibility are supported for children and young people
- Transitions
- Access to Independent SDS Information, Support and Advocacy
- Carers and parents rights and needs and SDS
We will explore key times in a child’s life, such as changing school, moving to adult services and changes in the level and type of support needed. We will look at how educational and social care legislation connect, as well as considering the rights and needs of carers and parents during this time.

Self Directed Support and Carers
Carers can potentially access an SDS budget in their own right. This course will explore how carers can access SDS, the rights and choices they have under relevant legislation and guidance and what to expect when they ask for support. Key issues and questions will also be explored for both carers of adults and carers of children and young people.

Setting up a Disabled Person’s Organisation (DPO)
Would you like to be involved in an organisation that promotes disabled people’s rights, challenges discrimination and prejudice and supports the Independent Living movement in Scotland? Would you like your current organisation to become a DPO, or to set up a new DPO for local people? This session will take a step-by-step guide to setting up a DPO, looking at the challenges involved and how to gather support and maintain momentum.

Equality Impact Assessments and SDS
This session will look at what Equality Impact Assessments are, what they are trying to achieve, when they need to be undertaken and what is included in them. It will also consider the application of the Public Sector Equality Duty and relate these to the implementation of SDS across Scotland. Find out how these could support your work to improve the implementation of SDS and how equality could become a central theme of the discussions on access to SDS.

Developing a Fundraising Strategy
Always looking for further funding opportunities? Developing a funding strategy is a key way to helping your group or organisation focus your time and effort on raising funds. We will explore key elements such as how to identify your objectives, knowing the difference you will make, understanding donors motivation, measuring the impact of your work and top tips for funding applications.
Writing a Constitution for your Group
If you’re looking to develop your group and become more organised and attract funding and support in the future, a good place to start is by developing a Constitution. A Constitution is simply a set of written rules covering the aims of your group, how it will be run, how the members work together, how decisions are made and who can join your group. This workshop will look at the key elements to writing a Constitution and what you can do once you have one.
