Event helps shape plans for a new Disabled People’s Organisation in Argyll and Bute
Disabled people, unpaid carers, community organisations and partners came together in Inveraray and online on Monday 28 September to discuss the possibility of creating a Disabled People’s Organisation (DPO) for Argyll and Bute.
Hosted by Self Directed Support Scotland (SDSS), the event was built on conversations with more than 100 people and organisations across the area. It offered an opportunity to share what had been heard so far during project-related engagement and explore what a locally led organisation could achieve.
Participants described barriers that affect everyday life, including inaccessible transport and buildings, digital exclusion, the additional costs of being disabled, and difficulties accessing services across rural and island communities. Discussions returned repeatedly to the need for disabled people’s experiences to shape decisions and lead to visible action.
In group discussions, people suggested that a DPO could bring disabled people together for peer support, provide a collective voice on local and national issues, and help people find information and existing services. Participants also explored practical ways to improve accessibility, including better access to events, transport and digital services. Several stressed that a future organisation would need to reach people where they live and gather, particularly on the islands, rather than expect everyone to travel or participate online.
The gathering also considered how an organisation could be established and governed. Attendees discussed a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) as one possible structure, including how a wider membership could help keep the organisation accountable to disabled people. These choices will need further work with the people who want to take the idea forward.
SDSS invited people interested in shaping the next stage to consider joining a steering group or expressing an interest in becoming a trustee. The aim is to develop an organisation led by disabled people, rooted in Argyll and Bute’s communities, and able to influence decisions that affect their rights and everyday lives.
